What Is a Tamper-Resistant Receptacle?

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle is an electrical outlet with internal shutters that block access to the energized contacts unless a plug applies pressure to both openings at once. The design helps prevent objects from entering one opening, while preserving normal plug operation. It is commonly installed in homes, offices, and other occupied spaces.

Key Takeaways About Tamper-Resistant Receptacle

  • Internal shutters cover the energized contacts.
  • A matching plug opens both shutters during insertion.
  • Tamper-resistant does not mean ground-fault protection.

How Tamper-Resistant Receptacle Works

A person tightens a wall outlet with a screwdriver at a workbench near a laptop window view

A Tamper-Resistant Receptacle contains spring-loaded shutters behind the face openings. The shutters stay closed when pressure reaches only one opening, which helps block objects such as keys or small tools. A properly shaped plug applies balanced pressure to both openings and moves the shutters aside.

The shutter mechanism operates during ordinary plug insertion and does not replace other forms of electrical protection. A Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter monitors current flow and responds to an electrical imbalance, while tamper resistance addresses access to the contact openings. Receptacle installation also includes checking the box, conductors, grounding path, and connection points for compatibility with the replacement device.

From the Earth Electric team

When we install a tamper-resistant receptacle, we inspect the existing box, conductors, grounding path, and device connections. We also check that the receptacle matches the circuit and that the shutters operate correctly after installation. Our team treats tamper resistance as one part of a broader outlet assessment.

Tamper-Resistant Receptacle in Practice: A Real-World Example

A family may choose a tamper-resistant receptacle for an outlet in a living area where children can reach the wall. The receptacle allows normal use of lamps and chargers while its shutters block single-object access to the contact openings.
