What is Wire Gauge?

Wire Gauge is a standardized way to describe a conductor’s diameter and cross-sectional area. In the American Wire Gauge system, a smaller gauge number means a larger wire. Larger conductors usually carry more current with less voltage drop. But the correct size also depends on insulation, installation conditions, circuit length, and overcurrent protection.
